Fisherman Out of Ireland: Inspiration and Design

Since 1991, Fisherman Out of Ireland has been producing knitwear melding the ancient techniques and material of Donegal knitting enlivened by modern styling and clever use of color and luxury yarns.

In the signature Fisherman Out of Ireland style, the ribs and stitches inspired by traditional Aran patterns are combined with a fresh perspective in sweaters, hats and scarves to define the total modern Irish look.

Louise Elliott, the designer for Fisherman, cites "The lovely Irish landscape, of course!" as inspiration for the colors used in her designs. Elliot credits the grasses and heather of the coastal landscape; sand, rock and seaweed and "the ocean blues which depending on our ever changing weather can be turquoise with white waves, ink blue or steely grey."

Fisherman Out of Ireland uses only natural fibers, such as wool and cashmere. Says Elliot, "This reflects our natural, earthy look and is generally kinder to the environment." Much of the yarn is spun by Kilcarra Yarns, also in Kilcar, just down the village road.

The village of Kilcar, home to Fisherman Out of Ireland, is located in a beautiful part of Southwest Donegal, between Ireland’s premier fishing port of Killybegs and majestic cliffs of Slieve League and the parish of Glencolmcille.

Maureen Carr of Fisherman Out of Ireland describes their setting: "The area around Kilcar offers panoramic seascapes, hills and mountains affording magnificent views; traditional crafts like knitting and weaving; a vibrant interest in Irish traditional music, lively pubs, and a friendly and welcoming people."
